The head of Government of Mexico City, Clara Brugada, announced together with her cabinet and authorities from the 16 boroughs of the capital, her intention to promote the recovery of markets as key spaces for commerce. To achieve this, she committed to implementing security measures that encompass everything from civil protection to crime and extortion prevention.
In a gesture of concrete support, 240 million pesos will be allocated to strengthen the social and commercial role of markets in the city. Brugada stated: "Markets should be the engine of the economy of this city." To prepare the markets for the future, the mayor emphasized the importance of having effective contingency plans.
The head of Government underlined the need to regularize the enrollment records of the different markets, offering the possibility of carrying out this process both in person and virtually. With the aim of boosting commercial activity in these spaces, an improvement program was proposed for preventive and corrective maintenance in the markets.
Among the additional measures announced, Brugada mentioned guided tours of the markets during the 2026 World Cup, as well as the installation of large screens for attendees to follow the matches. She also highlighted the Mercomuna program, through which many families in the city receive a voucher to purchase food and essential products in local markets.
To ensure security in these spaces, extensive surveillance will be carried out coordinated by Secretary Pablo Vázquez Camacho through the installation of tens of thousands of cameras both inside and outside the markets. The security measures will be complemented by joint meetings between local leaderships and the 16 boroughs, seeking consensus and agreements to reinforce the relevance of markets as economic engines of the city.
